Merichem Company -- Merichem Gas Technologiesprocess is a patented, wet scrubbing, liquid redox system that uses a chelated iron solution to convert H2S to innocuous, elemental sulfur. It does not use any toxic chemicals and does not produce any hazardous waste byproducts. The only chemical consumptions are replacement of a small amount of chelated iron lost in the sulfur filter cake, and caustic addition, to maintain the pH of the catalytic solution in the mildly alkaline range. The environmentally safe catalyst is readily available and since it's continuously regenerated in the process, less catalyst is used, more money is saved. This technology is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as maximum achievable control technology (MACT).

A treatment plant includes reverse osmosis, air stripping and chemical treatment processes. In the reverse osmosis process, the acquifier's brackish water is pressurized and forced through a semipermeable membrane. The dissolved CO2 and H2S pass through the membrane along with the purified water. The water is then passed through an air stripper to remove the dissolved H2S and CO2. Units can be designed for better than 99.9% removal efficiency.
