The tip is inserted into the notch on the rim of a manhole cover and then slipped under the cover by raising the handle end of the tool. The tips of the hooks are a half inch wide to fit standard covers. The red powder paint finish protects the hooks against rust and insulates the steel handle from high temperatures.
