The SRT-100, a Self-Contained Self-Rescuer, weighs 5.7 lb. and is housed in a stainless steel container measuring 7 ¾ in. x 4 in. x 5 ½ in. It is worn on the belt—not carried.

The canister contains everything necessary for supplying oxygen on demand and removing carbon dioxide from the exhaled air. Operation begins when the user pulls the fluorescent orange oxygen actuator tag, opening the valve on a small bottle of compressed starter oxygen. As moisture from the user's exhaled breath contacts the chemical bed, oxygen is produced on demand.
