Woolpert To Design Bridge Widening, Interchange Improvement

The project will enhance Arlington Road Bridge, which is located near the proposed site of the new Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Brookville, OH (PRWEB) - The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has contracted with Woolpert to prepare full-scale design plans for the widening of Arlington Road Bridge on County Road 9 over Interstate 70 in Montgomery County.

The design and construction of the project are expected to cost about $10.9 million.

Woolpert will design the replacement of the bridge superstructure and the widening of the piers and abutments to allow for the addition of a center turn lane and a sidewalk, while meeting the required vertical clearance over I-70.

The addition of a sidewalk is intended to improve connectivity for the anticipated relocation of the Montgomery County Fairgrounds to a site just northwest of the bridge.

The vertical clearance over I-70 will be altered to accommodate the increase in oversize vehicles and interstate commercial traffic. The national minimum clearance for interstate bridges is 16 feet, but ODOT prefers a minimum vertical clearance of 16 feet, 6 inches.

“We’ll need to adjust the lowest portion of the bridge by about 6 inches,” said Mike Avellano, Woolpert project manager.

The contract stipulates that the most cost-effective and least-disruptive methods will be used to widen the existing structure to expedite construction and accommodate traffic at the interchange. As a result, bridge closures will be kept to a minimum during construction.

Woolpert has multiple years of experience designing high-level bridges for public agencies, including ODOT and private companies.

“We understand the high-profile nature of this interchange and its importance to the city of Brookville,” Avellano said.
