The Domosys U-Chip family of microcontrollers/transceivers is specifically designed for embedding networking functionality into low-cost, everyday applications found in residential, commercial, utility and transportation markets. The units are designed to turn the simplest electrical device into an Internet appliance.

The U-Chip can be used in automated meter reading, giving utility companies an advantage for customer retention by offering value-added services such as bill presentment and payment, early detection of defective appliances, and remote troubleshooting of appliances.

Very flexible, this family of transceivers is optimized for communication over the power line, but it may also be used over the twisted pair medium. It combines a high-performance RISC 8052 microcontroller with a configurable network transceiver. In its flash memory version, the complete firmware of the U-Chip, including the protocol physical layer, can be uploaded remotely over the LAN. The modulation techniques allow it to meet American (FCC), European (CENELEC) and Canadian (RSS-210) emission standards.

It also embeds many peripherals such as SPI ports, watchdog and analog comparators. Moreover, the transceivers can support the CEBus standard and other control network protocols such as PowerBus, a narrow band proprietary solution offered by Domosys.
