National Exhibition Centre Selects Telensa For Wireless Outdoor Lighting Solution

Smart controls reduce the NEC’s energy and carbon footprint, and integrate with existing Building Management System

Telensa, the market leader in connected street lighting and smart city applications, today announced that it has been selected by the NEC, Birmingham to deploy Telensa PLANet wireless controls on its outdoor street and parking area lighting. The deployment is part of NEC Sustain; a campaign by the venue to prevent energy-waste for greener events.

The connected streetlights will cover both parking areas and streets leading to parking areas over the 652-acre site. The project includes API integration with the NEC’s Demma Building Management System (BMS). The integration enables single sign-on and real-time commands to respond to unscheduled events at the 24/7 venue, such as deliveries.

In any major facility or campus, indoor operations like lighting and heating are typically controlled by a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS). But outdoor lighting in car parks and access roads is not connected to the BMS, eliminating the potential for substantial energy savings. Telensa’s Control API enables a BMS like Demma to provide timed, event-specific or sensor-triggered lighting programs across many zones, and to dim lights when not required, reducing skyglow and glare for surrounding neighbourhoods.

Telensa PLANet technology already controls nearly two million municipal streetlights around the world. It also controls outdoor lighting in a number of high-profile private facilities, including ports, airports, retail and distribution.
