PRISM Foundation Improvement System

Source: Tensar Earth Technologies, Inc.
The Prism System is a composite soil and geogrid mattress structure that creates a stable embankment platform - even over extremely soft soils.
The construction of embankments, bridge approach fills, causeways, levees and dikes over weak soils - and especially wetlands - is challenging and costly.

To reduce costs and speed construction on these types of projects, Tensar Earth Technologies, Inc. developed the Prism Foundation Improvement System. Similar in application to concrete raft foundations, the Prism System is a composite soil and geogrid mattress structure that creates a stable embankment platform - even over extremely soft soils. The Prism System works by distributing loads over a wider area. It also creates an internally reinforced core that minimizes the footprint fill requirements and settlement potential the result of which is improved structural integrity at a lower cost.

Use this solution when your project is characterized by:

  • A need to construct in or adjacent to wetlands
  • A need for over-excavation and replacement of soft soils, particularly if contamination is present
  • A design specifying stone columns or other deep foundation method
  • Extensive surcharge loading to prevent long-term settlement
  • A need for environmentally sensitive soil treatment techniques
  • A potential to destabilize existing embankments when excavating adjacent areas
