PB Awarded Contract For Kuwait City Ring Road

New York, NY - Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) has been selected by the Ministry of Public Works, Kuwait, to provide construction supervision and contract administration services for the Package 1 scheme on the Kuwait 1st Ring Road at the Jahra Gate roundabout.

The project involves the construction of roads, bridges, storm water drainage, sewerage and other services on the major urban highway in the downtown area of the city. PB has been awarded the contract in conjunction with Gulf Consult, with which PB completed the design work in 2004. The project, which is expected to take three and a half years to complete, is expected to improve traffic flow at the western part of Kuwait City, the Jahra Gate intersection, with a significant reduction in the current heavy traffic congestion in the area. In addition, the associated roads within Kuwait City are also expected to benefit, alleviating current traffic congestion in and around the area.

Package 1 incorporates 1 kilometer of at-grade roads; 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of depressed roads in troughs and tunnels; 1.5 kilometers (.93 miles) of elevated roads; 14 bridges; storm water drainage; protection and relocation of existing utilities; and environmental protection work, traffic protection and maintenance of traffic flow during construction.

The project is expected to pose many challenges as the location is in the environmentally sensitive areas adjoining the historic Jahra Gate part of the city with an old and complex network of existing underground services. It will require maintaining services and traffic access during construction in this congested area with residential and commercial properties. Two additional packages are planned to follow and will lead to free-flowing traffic over the entire 1st Ring Road. Ultimately this will create an infrastructure to meet the future needs of the city.
