HNTB Corporation Selected For New York State I-84 Bridge Construction Project

Use of accelerated bridge construction process over State Route 9W will maintain mobility, traffic flow and toll collections

New York (PRWEB) - HNTB Corporation has been selected by the New York State Bridge Authority to design and manage the replacement of the overpass carrying Interstate 84 over Route 9W in Newburg, New York. Located at the western approach of the Newburg Beacon Bridge that spans the Hudson River, the project will utilize an accelerated bridge construction process to enable the existing eastbound and westbound lanes of the overpass to be demolished and replaced with a new structure over the course of a single weekend. The anticipated final completion date is November 2016.

A similar ABC project for the New York State Department of Transportation was successfully completed by HNTB on I-84 at Dingle Ridge Road in Putnam County, New York, in two weekends in late 2013. NYSDOT has been recognized with numerous national and international awards for the use of innovative construction techniques on that project.

“While this project poses a number of challenges, including its location at the intersection of two heavily travelled routes, the use of ABC techniques allows for reduced impacts to traffic operations, toll revenue collection at the Newburgh Beacon Bridge, and minimizes negative effects to mobility in that area during the construction process,” said Mike Sweeney, PE, HNTB chairman of professional services and senior vice president. “As this is HNTB’s second ABC bridge project along I-84, we are able to use proven and successful innovative design, construction and planning strategies.”

The bridge is owned by the NYSBA. Close coordination is required with the Federal Highway Administration for an interchange modification study, and with the New York State Department of Transportation, which is responsible for highway/interchange ramp reconfiguration.

HNTB has had a continuous presence in New York State since 1922 providing public and private agencies with comprehensive engineering, architectural and planning services. Some of the firm’s current work in the tri-state area includes the New NY Bridge (Tappan Zee Bridge), the new Kosciuszko Bridge, high-speed rail in New York state, New Jersey Transit Sandy recovery, architectural design for the Albany Capital Center, and Long Island Railroad Jamaica Station capacity improvements.
