DOTs approve use of uninterruptible power systems for traffic signals
The new SP I OOO Traffic UPS Series will power the intersections in flashing mode operation for up to IO hours. By placing the SP I 000 Series on the approved vendor list, these three states make it easier for municipalities in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey to purchase the traffic UPS. Clary is expecting more states to approve the Traffic UPS in upcoming months.
"We feel it is necessary to obtain these approvals from all 50 states so we can get Clary products to the municipalities faster, making the U.S. a safer place in which to drive," says Richard W. Henson, executive vice president of Clary. "These approvals enable agencies within the states to purchase Clary products without going through a lengthy and inefficient approval-bid cycle."
The UPS protect from ‘dirty power'
The SP 1000 Traffic UPS Series serves three important functions:
- 1. Power conditioning. Lightning strikes, transient power and line noise will bum through and degrade electronic devices over time. But controllers and equipment connected to the continuous output of a Clary SP I OOO Series get 24-hour protection from dirty power, regenerating a clean sinewave output, as well as regulating against sags (brownouts) and surges, thus reducing premature failure and improving equipment performance.
2. Backup power. Power for flashing red signals, up to the maximum power rating, for any type of signal head. Additional batteries can provide up to 12 hours of autonomy.
3. Continuous (battery) power. Continuous power to your signal controller, communications/modems, video equipment and other critical devices.
The SP I 000 (NEMA Style) and SP I OOOR (I 70 Style, 19 inch rackmount) offer battery backup for LED traffic signals up to the maximum systems power rating. Either style fits easily into most existing traffic cabinets and does not pose any special installation problems.
Police able to cut power to traffic signals during emergencies
All Clary SP Series Traffic UPS systems are compatible with two important emergency systems. First is the police-panel. The police-panel allows a police officer to insert a
special key and cut power to the traffic signal, ensuring safe operation during emergencies, or to put the intersection into flashing reds. The "signals off' switch kills battery power to field wiring in case of a knock-down where emergency crews need to rescue trapped victims or reduce fire/explosion hazards due to gasoline or hazardous materials spills.
The second emergency system is pre-emption. This system turns all the traffic lights to green along a rapid response vehicle's route to an emergency. This allows for faster response times and makes it safer for the emergency vehicles to cross intersections. The Clary Traffic UPS will allow pre-emption to work even during a power outage.
These UPSs deliver power conditioning and battery backup for additional applications such as Advanced Traffic Management Systems, ITS, early warning systems, incident management systems, communications hubs, video surveillance and traffic signals. Longer battery backup is available with the addition of more batteries.
