The tanks feature welded-steel construction, which is said to have a lower initial cost and lower maintenance cost than other materials. The elasticity of the steel also absorbs large amounts of energy, including earthquakes.
Municipal water reservoirs have a shell height (wall height) equal to or less than the tank diameter, and are economical in elevations high enough to provide gravity pressure. Standpipes have a shell height greater than the diameter of the tank.
